Memory

Home to the memory of CityArts (formerly Grapevine Arts and then City Arts Centre), The Archive is a living archive that houses a unique collection of papers, photographs and moving image material that documents and records the socially engaged, activist and collaborative arts practice traced and developed by CityArts since 1973. The Archive is unique in that the material collected in it is evidence of activity within an important and often invisible sector of Ireland's cultural heritage.

Since 2002 an archivist has been assembling these various documents and narratives to establish The Archive as an important public resource.

Launched in September 2006, The Archive now plays a central role in creating new interest in archives and archiving amongst the Irish cultural sector, drawing attention to the importance of memory building and its role in validating and supporting marginalised practices. The Archive acts as a catalyst for mapping emerging practices and for investigating strategies that heal the past, critique the present, and project a more creatve future.

Research areas focus on collaborative socio-cultural and politically engaged work and how such work may perform as catalysts for change in the city, for example arts and regeneration, arts and health, arts and disability, and intercultural arts. The Archive also contains interesting material on individual Irish artists and artist groups.

The Archive has received generous support from the Heritage Council funding which has ensured its continuing professional development. We are members of the Society of Archivists (UK and Ireland) and the Irish Society for Archives.
